MATHEMATICAL ASPECTS OF GRAVITATIONAL WAVE OBSERVATIONS
 

Streszczenie wykładu:

Detection of a gravitational wave signal from merger of two black holes is one of the most important discoveries of this century. This is a major experimental achievement. However it would not be possible without a concerted effort of astrophysicists, theoretical physicists and mathematicians.
In my lecture I shall briefly describe two predictions of Einstein's theory of relativity - gravitational waves and black holes. I shall describe the observation of the gravitational wave signal GW150914 from merger of two black holes, its significance, and several of its consequences. I shall present statistical methods of signal detection and parameter estimation that enabled confident extraction of the gravitational wave signal from the noise of the detectors. I shall also describe contribution of Polish scientists to various aspects of this discovery.
